Fonoteca is a music library owned by the Lisbon City Council. It opened on May 1994 and is the first and only Portuguese library exclusively dedicated to music.

Our Mission

Fonoteca aims at providing musical information, with a special emphasis on Portuguese music. It gathers its information from a variety of resources: documental, human and technical. When the desired information is not available in its premises an appropriated link is provided.

General Goals

- To promote music, especially the Portuguese one, in its variety of expressions;
- To stimulate an interest in music and to take part in the users' learning process, providing them access to culture and leisure;
- To develop musical events in cooperation with public or private agents;
- To support and promote pedagogical and cultural activities, as a means of promoting new composers, musicians and work, specially the Portuguese ones.

Fonoteca is a member of the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centers (IAML).
